On Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Bladen and Columbus county residents are receiving training in many aspects of computer work. Taught by Mary Baldwin, the classes cover skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and more.
"Thanks to a grant from International Paper Foundation, as well as a nonprofit level license from Microsoft, and the computers donated from Johns Hopkins University, we are able to offer this training," explained local superintendent Ocie Jones. "Southeastern Community College in Whiteville is supporting the instruction, and the Division of Senior Services is helping many to access the classes."
The newly operating center has gained partners from many sides, to enable the local people to get workforce training, health education, food sufficiency programs, and financial empowerment training.
"We are thrilled to be able to offer our hardworking neighbors this technological skill building," said Mr. Jones. "With the large screen monitors, the instructor can demonstrate to the entire class at the same time. This is a great service and we invite many people to come and participate."
